LR Question 26 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Kim: The rapidly growing world population is…

QUESTION TYPE: Agreement – Most Strongly Supported

ARGUMENTS: Kim argues that the growing population is taking up lots of land for food production and cities. Nature is threatened.

Hampton thinks that technology will allow us to feed the increased world population without using more land for agriculture.

ANALYSIS: They both agree that the population will grow. They also think that it is good to restrict the amount of land devoted to agriculture.

The wrong answers can all be eliminated because Hampton would disagree. They all mention that overpopulation will cause problems. But we can be fairly sure that Hampton thinks technology might solve all problems related to overpopulation.

This question asks which statement is most strongly supported. So it doesn’t matter that the correct answer (B) is not 100% established by the stimulus.

___________

  1. Hampton doesn’t think there is a problem, so it’s not clear why he would agree to this.
  2. CORRECT. Hampton definitely supports technology. And Kim probably would support this technology as well. There’s no obvious downside and it would help preserve nature by limiting the land needed for agriculture.
  3. Hampton probably doesn’t think this is a problem: technology will save us.
  4. Hampton disagrees, because technology will fix things.
  5. Hampton disagrees, because technology will fix things.
