LR Question 3 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: The most common bird in Stillwater Marsh is a species…

QUESTION TYPE: Paradox – Exception

FACTS: The marsh hen is the most common bird in Stillwater Marsh, but it is rarely seen. It is seen less often than any other bird, even those that are smaller or much less common

ANALYSIS: There are four wrong answers, so it’s hard to think of them all before-hand.

Instead, for this type of question it can be important to remind yourself of what it is like to watch a bird. When are they easy and hard to see? That knowledge can help guide you through the answers.

___________

  1. If the hen has excellent camouflage then it will be hard to see.
  2. CORRECT. This tells us that the hen is horrible to listen to, but it doesn’t explain why nobody can see it.
  3. It is much harder to see an animal that doesn’t move.
  4. It is harder to see birds at nighttime or when they are not active.
  5. It is a lot easier to see birds that are in groups and it is much easier to spot a bird when it flies.
